I numeri in inglese, così come avviene nella lingua italiana, sono suddivisi in numeri cardinali (cardinal numbers) e ordinali (ordinal numbers).

Un numero cardinale è un numero che indica una quantità numerica ben precisa, come uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque ecc.I numeri da 13 a 19 si scrivono aggiungendo il suffisso "-teen" all'unità corrispondente (es. six-sixteen, seven-seventeen).
Tutte le decine (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90) finiscono con "-ty", quindi risultano più facili da memorizzare. Per formare numeri composti da decine e unità, bisogna scrivere la decina e l'unità separati da un trattino (es. 21 = twenty-one).
Le centinaia (100, 200, 300 ecc.) si scrivono unendole alla decina e/o all'unità mediante la congiunzione "and" (es. 348 = thre hundred and forty-eight).
Le migliaia (1000, 2000, 3000 ecc.) si scrivono unendole alle centina senza aggiungere altro (es. 2348 = two thousand three hundred and forty-eight).
Le parole "hundred", "thousand" e "million" sono sempre precedute da "a" o da "one".
Numeri ordinali in inglese
Un numero ordinale è un numero che indica la posizione di qualcosa in un elenco, come primo, secondo, terzo, quarto (1°, 2°, 3°, 4°, 5°) ecc. Essi sono preceduti dall'articolo "the" e vengono usati nelle date (es. December 17th = the seventeenth of December).La maggior parte dei numeri ordinali termina in "th" ad eccezione di:
- uno = first (1st)
- due = second (2nd)
- tre = third (3rd)
Anche i numeri 5, 8, 9 e 12, sebbene terminano in "th", presentano alcune diversità (dal passaggio da numero cardinale a numero ordinale).
Le decine (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90) si formano aggiungendo il suffisso "-ieth" ai numeri cardinali.
Come si esprime lo zero in inglese
Un caso a parte è il numero zero "0", che cambia nome a seconda del contesto:- Zero/Nought = per l’aritmetica
- Zero = per i gradi
- o (la lettera) oppue "oh" = per i numeri telefonici
- Nil = usato nel linguaggio sportivo (calcistico)
- Love = usato nel linguaggio sportivo (tennistico)
Numeri decimali in inglese
Nella lingua inglese le cifre decimali sono separate da un punto (e non dalla virgola), e si leggono separamente.- 0.5 = point five
- 3.87 = three point eight seven
