Il past continuous, detto anche past progressive, , si riferisce a un'azione in corso o a un evento che si stava verificando in un determinato momento nel passato. Il past continuous si forma combinando il past simple (cioè, was/were) con il Present participle, ovvero il verbo con la forma in -ing, che corrisponde al nostro gerundio. Ci sono molte situazioni in cui questo tempo verbale potrebbe essere usato in una frase. Ad esempio, è spesso usato per descrivere condizioni che esistevano in passato, per descrivere qualcosa che stava accadendo nel passato finché un'altro evento non lo ha interrotto, per far luce su ciò che stava accadendo in un preciso momento nel passato e per riferirsi a un'azione abituale del passato.
