Testo in inglese

Education is an important part of British life. Some British schools are world famous. Most children in Britain start school in the year that they are five and they can leave at 16 but many peaple stay on until they are 18. Education is free and compulsory for all children between the ages of 5 - 16. Public Schools are private schools to which only elite families can have access. Some children are educated at home rather than in school.
All schools have a school uniform, even primary school.

Preschool or play school
The first part of the educational system is preschool or play school. Although not obligatory, parents may be interested in sending their children to such organizations for childcare or child development purposes. Public preschools can easily be found in the UK but spaces can be limited and you may be placed on a waiting list if you have chosen a particularly desirable school.
Preschool, although part of the educational system, is more for child development of social interactions among peers and to explore the child’s creativity. Children will spend their time in preschool doing creative activities like painting, drawing, playing, moulding and singing educational songs or nursery rhymes. Play school does not provide full-time care, operating for only a few hours a day during school term time, often in the mornings only. The most key part of preschool in the UK is to better prepare children to interact with others and become accustomed to being away from their parents before they begin primary school.

Children's education in Britain is normally divided into two separate stages. They are Primary education and Secondary education.

Primary Education
Primary education begins in the UK at age 5 and continues until age 11. Primary school is divided into infant school, for children aged 5 to 7, and junior school, for children aged 7 to 11. In the first years of primary schools pupils learn the basics of reading and writing and also have lots of time set aside for playing and doing creative activities.
They usually study maths, English, science, ICT, history, geography, RE, art, music and PE and in years 10-11 they also choose four or five other subjects.
At the end of primary school come the S.A.T.S (national assessment tests) which are taken by all pupils. However it is not necessary to pass these in order to get into secondary school and when pupils are 11 year old they pass directly to secondary school. In UK schools, all tests and exams are written (there are'nt any oral tests), except for languages. Students get a report at the end of each term.

Secondary Education
From age 11 to 16, students will enter secondary school. Some schools are only for boys or only for girls but most schools are mixed (they take boy and girls). For each subject students have a different teacher and they go to different classroom. The majority of secondary schools are comprehensive, which means they are not selective and offer courses for all abilities.
Secondary education is divided into: Grammar School, Technical School and Modern School.
Grammar schools on the other hand are selective and pupils must have a high level of ability. They provide a more traditional literary and scientific education. The core subjects studied at secondary school are English, Mathematics and Science along with other important subjects such as Technology, Computer Science, a foreign language, History, Geography and Citizenship. In Years 12 and 13, the sixth form, students specialise in three or four subjects and they take their final school exams (A levels) when they are 18. At the age of 16 after 5 years of secondary school, students take their GCSE exams (General Certificate of Secondary Education).

Further Education
Once a student finishes secondary education they have the option to get a full-time job or to extend into further education to take their A-Levels, GNVQ's, BTEC's or other such qualifications. UK students planning to go to college or university must complete further education which has a duration of 2 years.

Holidays and school year
The school year begins in the first week of September and finishes in the last week of July. It is usually divided into three terms. Students have two weeks holiday at Christmas and Easter, six weeks in the summer and one week in October, February and May.

The school week and the school day
The school week is from Monday to Friday and the school day is from about 9.00 to 3:30, so most students in the UK don't go to school on Saturdays. There are two short breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and one long break at lunchtime. Students usually have lunch at school.

Istruzione primaria
